Kissing 2015 Goodbye

Hi guys! Long time no blog, huh??

Long story short about where I’ve been – in September, work and life started to weigh really heavily on my mind, and I found myself super uninspired. I kept up with my Novels and Nail Polish Instagram account, but I couldn’t bring myself to do much of anything past snapping a couple photos and painting my nails once a week.

But here we are, just a few hours away from 2016, and I’m ready to get inspired again! So here’s what I was up to in 2015 & some my goals for 2016!

2015 Reading Challenge – Looks like I’m finishing out 2015 with 57 of 60 books read! This is by far the highest number of books I’ve read in one year, so I’m definitely proud – even if I didn’t reach my goal. Check out my Goodreads or reading challenge page for a full list of the books I read!

Bookshelf Beauty – I ran out of places to put my books, so a couple months ago I bought a new – and BIGGER – bookshelf! It’s basically my most prized possession at this point. Though if I’m being honest with myself, I’ll probably need another one soon because this guy is already full! And if you’re wondering, those super fun string lights are from Bright Lab Lights & I love ’em!

Novels and Nail Polish YouTube Channel – Earlier this year, I started up my YouTube channel, and while I only have 5 videos, I’m really happy with what I’ve done so far! Making videos definitely took a hit when I stopped blogging, but this is something I’m going to really work on in 2016. Keep an eye out for hauls, tutorials and more coming soon!

The Year of Fantasy YA – This year, I read a TON of YA Fantasy novels. I kicked off the trend early in the year when I re-read HP, The Lunar Chronicles and the Grisha Trilogy. And pretty much my entire summer was taken up by The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. Lastly, I finally fell in love with the Throne of Glass series in the fall. Basically, I’m obsessed with all of them! I can’t wait to see what books I discover in 2016!

#Bookstagram – 2015 was another amazing year for the Bookstagram community. I know I’m continually inspired by the gorgeous photos I see my fellow bookworms post every day. I think it’s easy to forget sometimes that we should post because we love it, so 2016 is going to be all about gratitude, choosing happiness and not comparing myself to others on social media!

The Way You Make Me Feel {Books, that is}

I’m not usually one to just randomly blog about how I’m feeling, but mid-read of The Heir, I had this overwhelming urge to write about what books mean to me. So, here it is!

Green book stack // Novels and Nail Polish

At the risk of sounding super cliche, each and every book I’ve read has left a little mark on my heart or soul. There are moments I find myself smiling, laughing, crying or just talking to myself/characters of the book. And as these tendencies started up during the highly entertaining fluff that is The Selection Series, I realized that whether or not the book has won a Pulitzer or is purely brain candy, what really matters is how a book makes you feel. When you turn the last page of the novel you’re currently reading, and you’re left thinking (good or bad thoughts), that’s the mark of a great book.

It amazes me day after day that the same simple words of the English language, strung together in different combinations can elicit tears on one page and smiles or genuine laugh out loud moments on another. And that’s where the magic of books truly lies! Each book touches people in a different way, but they leave us a little bit different than when we started – and better, in my opinion!

Ok, random book-loving rant completed! Thanks for reading along as I get sappy and try to explain why I love books so much. Happy Reading!

Reading Slump: Common Cures

As my fellow bookworms can tell you, two seemingly innocent words (when paired together) can instill the fear of You Know Who in each of us: READING SLUMP. I’ve had my fair share of these dreaded moods. When everything you pick up refuses to catch your eye, and it seems like you might be on the verge of the worst break up in history (between you and literature, of course).

Well, don’t fret. I have a couple tricks up my sleeve to get out of this mood quicker than Harry can disarm his opponent!

  1. Put down what you’re currently reading. A lot of times, when you’re not exactly feeling the book you are trying to read, you lose interest and find something else to do. It’s ok to put a book down, I promise. It doesn’t have to be for good, it just might not be the right time!
  2. Don’t read what you THINK you should be reading, read what you WANT to read. We all get caught up in peer pressure; when we feel like we should be reading more “classics” or “adult books.” PSH, you do you boo! If you want to read nothing but romance novels, DO IT. I love YA lit, and I’m proud. Read what you love because you don’t have to prove anything to anyone!
  3. Pick up an old favorite. Grabbing one of my all-time fav books, like HP or The Lunar Chronicles, reminds me why I love reading when I’m worried I’ve forgotten. You’ll be more inspired to grab a new one when you remember why you love books!
  4. And if all else fails… Don’t force it! The worst thing you can do is push yourself so hard in a direction you don’t want to go that you end up (God forbid!) resenting books! Take a break and do something else for a while. If you only read one book that month, it ain’t no thing! You’ll find your way back soon enough, us bookworms always do.

Do you have a sure-fire way to avoid the dreaded reading slump? Don’t be selfish! Share the goods in the comments below. Happy Reading!

World Book Day

Two awesome book holidays in one week? Hell yeah! Happy World Book Day to all of my fellow bookworms and bibliophiles. May your book pages never tear and your place never be lost!

{Man Crush Monday} Winger’s Ryan Dean West

WingerI’ve been on a contemporary kick lately, and Winger didn’t disappoint!! The quirky, awkward, sex-obsessed teenage protagonist is my Man Crush today because he was so much fun to follow (in the most ridiculous way of course). Ryan Dean West tries, fails, grows a pair and then learns a lot about love and life throughout the novel, and I love the visual story he takes us on.

Winger Cover Inspired ManicureI’m excited to share my mani with everyone tomorrow because I was so inspired to paint it as soon as I put the book down!

Have you read Winger? What did you think about Ryan Dean West? Happy Reading!
