Easter Egg Nails

Happy Easter! This year, we had the cutest gold foil eggs in our house, and I was definitely inspired by them for my Easter nails. I used a dry brush nail art technique on top of a pastel rainbow. To achieve this look, wipe off a majority of the polish from the brush on the side of the bottle, and then gently sweep across your nails in various directions. It’s a super simple technique, and I even used two different golds to add some extra dimension!

Nail Polish Trend Report {Spring 2016}

Taking a page out of Pantone’s book, this year’s spring color trends are filled with peaceful & tranquil shades and pops of vivid brights. Along with Rose Quartz and Serenity, I’ve pulled together a few polishes that I’m loving for spring!Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishRose Quartz & Serenity Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishPale pink and pastel periwinkle are perfect colors for spring, and they also happen to be Pantone’s 2016 Colors of the Year. My favorite selections for these two colors are Essie Bikini So Teeny – no surprise here! – and Julep Martha.

Coral & Turquoise Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishThese are two of my favorite colors to wear from spring into summer. They are slightly more vibrant than my first two picks, but are still subtle enough for these next couple months. wHet Nails Hubris and Julep Alyssa are spot on for this trend.

Pops & SparkleSpring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishPantone’s Spring Trend Report noted that bright pops are the perfect contrast to the otherwise very calming and tranquil spring selections. Enter, Butter London Cheeky Chops, the ultimate combination of pastel and bright yellow. Another popular trend this season is jewel tones, like the gorgeous Essie Starry Starry Night. And if you’re feeling adventurous this spring, glitter top coats, like Julep Melody, are perfect to add a little something extra to your manicure.

What colors do you love to wear during spring? Let me know if I mentioned one of your favorites! Happy Reading!

Children’s Book Week

Hop on Pop Cover Inspired Manicure // Children's Book Manicures // Novels and Nail PolishIn honor of Read Across America Day this past week, I decided to return to my childhood and paint a couple of children’s book cover-inspired manicures! If you’re not a teacher or don’t have children in elementary school, you might not be familiar with this little holiday, so here’s the gist. March 2nd celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday, so kids dress up as the Cat in the Hat and all that jazz. It also happens to take place the day before World Book Day, which worked out well!

Last year, I joined up with Julep to create a Dr. Seuss manicure for Read Across America Day. This year, the wonderful folks at Albert Whitman sent me some adorable picture books, which were perfect to create a series of children’s book cover nail art. So join me on a trip back in time to all of our childhoods!

Hop on Pop, Dr. Seuss

I’ve always loved Hop on Pop! It’s one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books, so I decided to take the bright colors and minimal cover art, and use them as color block nail art inspiration! I played with the idea of the green grass across the tips of my nails, and did fun geometric shapes in orange, like the text across the top.

This book is too sweet! The illustrations are so lovely, and I really enjoyed the pastel pink and blue color palette. It made for a very nice minimalist manicure, which allowed me to focus on creating detailed recreations of the center imagery!

This one was really fun for me. I did a little mix of the prior two approaches – some literal and some inspired. For Rapunzel’s pink dress, I used the triangular shape it creates as a geometric accent nail. For the rest of the manicure, I played up the TONS of flowers on the cover, and included a little reference to her long, blonde hair on my pinkie.

Rock the Polka Dots {Minnie Mouse Nail Art}

Her classic polka dot look has been continually reimagined by the fashion industry through the decades and continues to drive trends today. – Soo Koo, Disney Consumer Products VP Product Development

Minnie Mouse Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

Minnie Mouse is totally classic. From her bloomers and polka dot dress to her sweet pillbox hat, she has looked fabulous for the past eighty years! In honor of National Polka Dot Day, an event will be held in Downtown LA, featuring products and fashion inspired by this adorable mouse.

I decided to get in on the fun, and show off how I #RocktheDots!

Minnie Mouse Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

I grabbed a couple classic Minnie Mouse colors to get started – white, black, red and pink. In true Novels and Nail Polish fashion, I designed a fun multi-mani with stripes, polka dots and scalloped accents. My trusty dotting tool was perfect for the polka dots, and I created the scallops by paining thick, vertical lines at varying heights and rounding off the top with a detail brush.

Quick tip – when painting a dotticure with multiple colors, test out the order on a piece of paper so you know what color pattern you want for the final product!

September Julep Maven Box {Unboxing & Swatches}

Ready for some of the prettiest colors you’ve seen in a while? Well here they are!

When I first saw the full September Julep collection, I almost died. I needed the polishes, and I needed them now. They are rich, delicate and feminine shades that are so inspiring. And on top of that, Julep threw in their signature purple shade for free! Best month ever!

I’ve swatched out the five colors & added in some additional thoughts/details about each polish:

Julep Zoey – I adore this shade. It’s a dusty blue/green/grey that will transition between summer and winter so well. The formula was a bit thick, but nothing I couldn’t handle (which I will gladly do for the perfection of the color). It’s a little bit reminiscent of Julep Shelly, which is another of my favorites, but different enough to fit a fall color palette!

September Julep Maven Unboxing // Novels and Nail Polish

Julep Delores – Holo obsession, part 1 of 2. YAS. It’s a beauty, and I’m in love. I don’t have anything like it, which is rare to find since I own WAY too much nail polish. Two coats + top coat = heaven.

September Julep Maven Unboxing // Novels and Nail Polish

Julep Aubrey – Like I mentioned in the video, I had really high hopes for this polish before putting it on. Plum/burgundy during fall is everything, but this guy just fell flat on my nails. I suppose it’s pretty enough, but it really isn’t doing anything for me right now. I’ll try it again later in fall, and hopefully it’ll grow on me!

September Julep Maven Unboxing // Novels and Nail Polish

Special Edition Julep – WOO! Every maven is probably rejoicing at this freebie! It’s Julep’s signature color, and one of the main reasons for getting this box. Radiant Orchid {à la Pantone 2014 color of the year} returns in full force, and this is going to be the perfect color for spring and summer next year!

September Julep Maven Unboxing // Novels and Nail Polish

Julep Ellis – Holo obsession, part 2 of 2. Double YAS! If it’s possible to outdo holo number 1, than Ellis is the polish to do the job. This pale pink holographic shimmer and Zoey are my two stand-outs from this month. Is it weird that I can’t stop staring… ooh shiny!

Fani Mani {Fangirl Inspired Manicures}

Fangirl Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail PolishRainbow Rowell is a contemporary lit goddess! I probably say this more often than I would like to admit, but we love RR around here… case & point my Landline and Attachments cover-inspired manis!

Fangirl was my first Rainbow Rowell book, and has been one of my favorite contemporaries since that moment. What is there not to love about cute boys, nerdy girls, fan fiction and a Harry Potter inspired book within a book (side note – who is STOKED for Carry On??)! So when I found out about the new special edition versions, I seriously had to talk myself out of buying all THREE. I settled on the salmon cover from Target, and I’m very pleased!

Now comes the fun part!

Fangirl Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

Fangirl Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

I put a ton of pressure on myself not to mess these guys up because I’m so in love with both the story and the covers. That’s probably what took me so long to actually do them after reading the book – but now I’m ready. Let’s start with the original!

Fangirl Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

Mint and Fangirl – you can’t have one without the other. I don’t think I can count the number of times I’ve taken a pic for Instagram of mint/pastel/rainbow books and Fangirl is ALWAYS in there!

To get the iconic minty color, I used two coats Essie Fashion Playground. A couple of details that stood out to me on this cover were the thought and speech bubbles, as well as the adorable Levi illustration. I played with minimalist versions of the bubbles and plaid pattern of his shirt for the accent nail.

Fangirl Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

Fangirl Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail PolishAnd on the other hand (pun totally intended!), the Collector’s Edition Fangirl!

Fangirl Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

When I first sat down to paint this mani, I had trouble finding the perfect way to interpret the cover differently than the previous design. I didn’t want to take the easy route of same design, different colors. And it’s actually really funny the random places inspiration hits. I was walking out of Ulta after buying the teal I needed for the cover and BOOM, I knew what I wanted to do! Color blocked stripes that are inspired by the block letters of the title.

I got the perfect salmon with two coats of Julep Alicia, and painted a diagonal color block accent nail with China Glaze Turned Up Turquoise and Zoya Selene. From the start, I’ve never been into actual people on my nails, but Cath and Levi are highlighted so much more on the special edition cover. To pull from them, I painted Cath’s top knot and a heart on my middle finger using the Julep Plie Wand, which is seriously a lifesaver when it comes to painting detail!

I Scream, You Scream! {National Ice Cream Day}

On the real, isn’t every day really National Ice Cream Day?? But if we must, let’s celebrate National Ice Cream day in style – with an Ice Cream manicure!

National Ice Cream Day Mani // Novels and Nail PolishFrom the time I was little, Mint Chocolate Chip has been my absolute favorite flavor! Nowadays, I tend to dabble in the cookies & cream realm too, and well, if you can combine mint and Oreo, I’m in heaven! So this little mani is an homage to to the creamy goodness that is frozen mint and chocolate chips.

Tools I Used // Plie Wand + Julep Max + Essie Sand Tropez + Fashion Playground + OPI Alpine Snow
Tools I Used // Plie Wand + Julep Max + Essie Sand Tropez + Fashion Playground + OPI Alpine Snow

The multi-mani still hasn’t lost it’s appeal for me yet, so that’s what I did! Julep Max is seriously the PERFECT chocolate chip glitter, which is what really inspired the whole manicure. I played with striping tape for my thumb and pinky to give a little bit of geometric fun to the whole look, along with a solid mint nail and color-blocked pointer finger.

National Ice Cream Day Mani // Novels and Nail Polish

Now let’s get down to it – the ice cream cone! I started with a base coat of OPI’s Alpine Snow and let that dry. Next, I used striping tape and Sand Tropez up half my nail to create the cone. I applied a couple coats of Fashion Playground to the other half of my nail to begin the ice cream. Once that dried, I used the dotting tool attachment for the Plie Wand to create the scalloped edge and small drip down the nail. Topped it off with a quick coat of chocolate chips, and there you go!
