Stephanie Perkins Book Cover Inspired Art {DIY}

Nail art & reading aren’t the only two things I do in my free time. Sometimes, I even dabble in the world of DIY artsy stuff! In 2015, I read one of the most adorable contemporary series ever – Anna and the French Kiss (et al) by Stephanie Perkins. Seriously guys, they’re THE CUTEST!

Since I basically fell head over heels for this series, I was most definitely inspired to do all the things: nails, YouTube videos, arts & crafts. So far, I’ve completed one of those projects – these super fun and simple cover-inspired prints!

Everybody loves a good ombre, and each of these books has their own distinctive color palette. To complete this project, I used the following

  • High-quality art paper
  • Scrap paper to trace doodle
  • Sharpies – black + one color for each book (pink, orange, green)
  • Nail Polish – 3 colors for each book in varying shades

I started off by hand-lettering each couple’s names slightly above center, so there’s a bit of extra room at the bottom for the ombre polish. Once I finished off the names, I traced the doodles from the covers (heart for Anna, star for Lola and rose for Isla) and drew them in between the names with Sharpie. To finish up, I pained the nail polish across the bottom from darkest to lightest. To make it look extra blended, make sure you overlap the two colors as it transitions. Of course, don’t worry about it looking “perfect” because that’s the fun in the messy style!

Mani in Bloom {Puffin in Bloom Cover Inspired Manicures}

Puffin in Bloom Cover Inspired Manicure // Novels and Nail PolishI am head over heels in love with the Puffin in Bloom collection, and have been since I originally began noticing them during my frequent visits to Barnes & Noble. Rifle Paper Co. creates stunning everything, so it’s no surprise that this collab between them and Puffin Classics was executed so perfectly!

On Black Friday, I finally made the leap and bought the box set (which comes with the most adorable matching bookmark). The covers are floral and feminine and SO inspriring, so what did I do? Painted 4 different manicures, of course!

I used a WHOLE bunch of colors, so it would be pretty impossible to name all of them. My usual favorites – Julep, OPI and Nail Inc. – definitely made an appearance.

Without further ado, here are my cover-inspired manicures that quickly rose to the top of my favorite list!

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery

Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Kissing 2015 Goodbye

Hi guys! Long time no blog, huh??

Long story short about where I’ve been – in September, work and life started to weigh really heavily on my mind, and I found myself super uninspired. I kept up with my Novels and Nail Polish Instagram account, but I couldn’t bring myself to do much of anything past snapping a couple photos and painting my nails once a week.

But here we are, just a few hours away from 2016, and I’m ready to get inspired again! So here’s what I was up to in 2015 & some my goals for 2016!

2015 Reading Challenge – Looks like I’m finishing out 2015 with 57 of 60 books read! This is by far the highest number of books I’ve read in one year, so I’m definitely proud – even if I didn’t reach my goal. Check out my Goodreads or reading challenge page for a full list of the books I read!

New Bookshelf // Novels and Nail Polish

Bookshelf Beauty – I ran out of places to put my books, so a couple months ago I bought a new – and BIGGER – bookshelf! It’s basically my most prized possession at this point. Though if I’m being honest with myself, I’ll probably need another one soon because this guy is already full! And if you’re wondering, those super fun string lights are from Bright Lab Lights & I love ’em!

Novels and Nail Polish YouTube Channel – Earlier this year, I started up my YouTube channel, and while I only have 5 videos, I’m really happy with what I’ve done so far! Making videos definitely took a hit when I stopped blogging, but this is something I’m going to really work on in 2016. Keep an eye out for hauls, tutorials and more coming soon!

The Year of Fantasy YA – This year, I read a TON of YA Fantasy novels. I kicked off the trend early in the year when I re-read HP, The Lunar Chronicles and the Grisha Trilogy. And pretty much my entire summer was taken up by The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. Lastly, I finally fell in love with the Throne of Glass series in the fall. Basically, I’m obsessed with all of them! I can’t wait to see what books I discover in 2016!

#Bookstagram – 2015 was another amazing year for the Bookstagram community. I know I’m continually inspired by the gorgeous photos I see my fellow bookworms post every day. I think it’s easy to forget sometimes that we should post because we love it, so 2016 is going to be all about gratitude, choosing happiness and not comparing myself to others on social media!

September Julep Maven Box {Unboxing & Swatches}

Ready for some of the prettiest colors you’ve seen in a while? Well here they are!

When I first saw the full September Julep collection, I almost died. I needed the polishes, and I needed them now. They are rich, delicate and feminine shades that are so inspiring. And on top of that, Julep threw in their signature purple shade for free! Best month ever!

I’ve swatched out the five colors & added in some additional thoughts/details about each polish:

Julep Zoey – I adore this shade. It’s a dusty blue/green/grey that will transition between summer and winter so well. The formula was a bit thick, but nothing I couldn’t handle (which I will gladly do for the perfection of the color). It’s a little bit reminiscent of Julep Shelly, which is another of my favorites, but different enough to fit a fall color palette!

Julep Delores – Holo obsession, part 1 of 2. YAS. It’s a beauty, and I’m in love. I don’t have anything like it, which is rare to find since I own WAY too much nail polish. Two coats + top coat = heaven.

Julep Aubrey – Like I mentioned in the video, I had really high hopes for this polish before putting it on. Plum/burgundy during fall is everything, but this guy just fell flat on my nails. I suppose it’s pretty enough, but it really isn’t doing anything for me right now. I’ll try it again later in fall, and hopefully it’ll grow on me!

Special Edition Julep – WOO! Every maven is probably rejoicing at this freebie! It’s Julep’s signature color, and one of the main reasons for getting this box. Radiant Orchid {à la Pantone 2014 color of the year} returns in full force, and this is going to be the perfect color for spring and summer next year!

Julep Ellis – Holo obsession, part 2 of 2. Double YAS! If it’s possible to outdo holo number 1, than Ellis is the polish to do the job. This pale pink holographic shimmer and Zoey are my two stand-outs from this month. Is it weird that I can’t stop staring… ooh shiny!

White After Labor Day {Nail Polish Edition}

“Never wear white after Labor Day.”

White Negative Space Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

While I definitely take cues from fashion rules, this one is a little bit harder to follow. Especially living in Southern California, where the weather is as hot as your Venti PSL through the end of November. With Labor Day coming up tomorrow, I decided to shine a spotlight on white polishes – my favorite brands and a fun negative space mani!

White Nail Polish Showdown – Top White Nail Polish Picks

Essie Blanc + OPI Alpine Snow + Ulta Snow White + Sally Hansen White On
Essie Blanc + OPI Alpine Snow + Ulta Snow White + Sally Hansen Let’s Snow

I tested out four white polishes: Essie, OPI, Ulta and Sally Hansen. I’ve been a religious Blanc user for years, but it was never the perfect white. It turns out that it’s actually not even in my top two from this test!

Best White Nail Polishes // Novels and Nail Polilsh

First thing I learned from trying out the polishes is that it’s really hard to photograph white nail polish and make it look true to life. Above are the four bottles and their corresponding swatches. You probably can’t tell, but the winner is…

Best White Nail Polishes // Novels and Nail Polilsh

OPI’s Alpine Snow (shown on pointer finger). A close second was Ulta’s Snow White (ring finger). Sally Hansen came in dead last. It was streaky and not opaque at all in two coats. Sadly, Essie Blanc wasn’t much better – still streaky and not very user friendly compared to the wide OPI brush or creamy consistency of Ulta’s Snow White.

White Negative Space Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

Now that we’ve figured out which white does the job best, let’s chat about negative space manicures. First, make sure you have a good base coat that won’t peel off with striping tape, which can leave the unpolished area uneven. Next, tape off your negative space design and paint finger by finger, peeling off the tape before the polish dries. It’s the perfect subtle mani for Labor Day… and every day after that!

Novels and Nail Polish {YouTube Channel Announcement}

Guys, I did a thing! I’ve been thinking about starting a YouTube channel for a while now – somewhere to talk everything books & nails. I also really wanted to try my hand at filming nail art tutorials. Growing up in theatre made it always seem possible, but it’s hard to actually push your insecurities aside and take the plunge!

So this week I’ve decided to try my hand at it, and I’m really happy with where I’m starting. Check it out and subscribe so you don’t miss any of the fun!
