Nail Polish Trend Report {Spring 2016}

Taking a page out of Pantone’s book, this year’s spring color trends are filled with peaceful & tranquil shades and pops of vivid brights. Along with Rose Quartz and Serenity, I’ve pulled together a few polishes that I’m loving for spring!Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishRose Quartz & Serenity Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishPale pink and pastel periwinkle are perfect colors for spring, and they also happen to be Pantone’s 2016 Colors of the Year. My favorite selections for these two colors are Essie Bikini So Teeny – no surprise here! – and Julep Martha.

Coral & Turquoise Spring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishThese are two of my favorite colors to wear from spring into summer. They are slightly more vibrant than my first two picks, but are still subtle enough for these next couple months. wHet Nails Hubris and Julep Alyssa are spot on for this trend.

Pops & SparkleSpring 2016 Nail Polish Trend Report // Novels and Nail PolishPantone’s Spring Trend Report noted that bright pops are the perfect contrast to the otherwise very calming and tranquil spring selections. Enter, Butter London Cheeky Chops, the ultimate combination of pastel and bright yellow. Another popular trend this season is jewel tones, like the gorgeous Essie Starry Starry Night. And if you’re feeling adventurous this spring, glitter top coats, like Julep Melody, are perfect to add a little something extra to your manicure.

White After Labor Day {Nail Polish Edition}

“Never wear white after Labor Day.”

White Negative Space Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

While I definitely take cues from fashion rules, this one is a little bit harder to follow. Especially living in Southern California, where the weather is as hot as your Venti PSL through the end of November. With Labor Day coming up tomorrow, I decided to shine a spotlight on white polishes – my favorite brands and a fun negative space mani!

White Nail Polish Showdown – Top White Nail Polish Picks

Essie Blanc + OPI Alpine Snow + Ulta Snow White + Sally Hansen White On
Essie Blanc + OPI Alpine Snow + Ulta Snow White + Sally Hansen Let’s Snow

I tested out four white polishes: Essie, OPI, Ulta and Sally Hansen. I’ve been a religious Blanc user for years, but it was never the perfect white. It turns out that it’s actually not even in my top two from this test!

Best White Nail Polishes // Novels and Nail Polilsh

First thing I learned from trying out the polishes is that it’s really hard to photograph white nail polish and make it look true to life. Above are the four bottles and their corresponding swatches. You probably can’t tell, but the winner is…

Best White Nail Polishes // Novels and Nail Polilsh

OPI’s Alpine Snow (shown on pointer finger). A close second was Ulta’s Snow White (ring finger). Sally Hansen came in dead last. It was streaky and not opaque at all in two coats. Sadly, Essie Blanc wasn’t much better – still streaky and not very user friendly compared to the wide OPI brush or creamy consistency of Ulta’s Snow White.

White Negative Space Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish

Now that we’ve figured out which white does the job best, let’s chat about negative space manicures. First, make sure you have a good base coat that won’t peel off with striping tape, which can leave the unpolished area uneven. Next, tape off your negative space design and paint finger by finger, peeling off the tape before the polish dries. It’s the perfect subtle mani for Labor Day… and every day after that!

Nail Polish Favorites // Summer 2015

Summer – Now is the time to paint your nails the color you want and spend your days outside in the sunshine! This season, I’m all about textures and colors that stand out past the normal cream red that is classic during June, July and August.

Summer 2015 Nail Polish Trends // Novels and Nail Polish

Sun-bleached pastels, jellies and berry brights are living on my nails these days! I was really interested in the unique textures and finishes that the fashion shows and magazines were highlighting for summer 2015, so collecting these polishes was a lot of fun. Let me show you what I’ve found!

Summer 2015 Nail Polish Trends // Novels and Nail PolishPowder Blue – Bleached, pastel polishes like Essie’s Find Me An Oasis are just so perfect for summer. They have a little more personality than stark white, but are still clean and classic for those summer nights! Plus, they really make your tan look fab!

Glitter – No longer are glitter polishes only for the holidays! Chunky glitter is fun, AND a layer of it on top of your mani can extend the life of your polish for another couple of days. Play around with cream polishes and coordinating glitters for a punchy manicure!

Lavender – As the days get longer, summer sunsets are so gorgeous and I adore the blues and purples of twilight! Lavender always reminds me of that time of day when you’re sitting outside and watching the sun go down, cold drink in hand.  Julep London is full coverage and creamy, and a great pastel to bring into summer months.

Neutrals – I’m a huge advocate for big, bright colors during the summer months (you’ll see below!), but sometimes you want a nice, nude nail to polish off your crisp white summer sundress! I might be biased, but that’s where Zoya’s Taylor makes her debut!

Summer 2015 Nail Polish Trends // Novels and Nail PolishFuchsia – Flirty. Feminine. Fun! All my favorite adjectives to describe the berry bright fuchsia, especially OPI’s Pink Flamenco. Take inspiration from the blooming bougainvillea all around!

Tangerine Red – Jellies are all the rage this year, so why not combine the summery tangerine with a fun sheer look. One coat gives you a sexy, peek-a-boo mani, or pair with a chunky glitter for a whole new effect!

Nail Polish Favorites // Spring 2015

SPRING! My favorite season is finally upon us, and I am overly excited for the gorgeous nail polish trends this year.

Spring 2015 Nail Polish Trends // Novels and Nail Polish

I am so inspired by the Pantone collection, En Plein Air, for Spring 2015. It’s a gorgeous blend of soft pastels and understated bright shades that you’d find in florals & nature, and ultimately will stand out beautifully on your nails. We seriously can’t do wrong with any of their choices. You know who else has channeled this trend TO PERFECTION? Essie’s collab Spring 2015 Collection, Flowerista, with Rebecca Minkoff.

I could continue to rave about how passionate I am when it comes to the absolutely gorgeous colors gracing nails this season, but how about I just show you?

Spring 2015 Nail Polish Trends // Novels and Nail Polish

Marsala – As Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year, Marsala is rich and robust, which lends itself to great manicures. I love Mint’s Moonlit Stroll as the perfect, wearable version of this trend. It has so many dimensions, and when I have it on, I can’t keep my eyes off it!

Nude – If you ask me, a good nude is always on trend no matter the season. When you’re looking during spring, you need a nude that brings new life and depth into your wardrobe in the same way the earth begins to find life again after winter. If you’ll bear with me, I’m about to start my lovefest over Essie’s spring collection! Picked Perfect is one of two nudes in their new collection, and this guy specifially is a warm almond shade I’ve fallen in love with.

Teal – I’ve already mentioned how much I love Essie’s Spring Collection this year, so obviously my teal of choice this season is Garden Variety! There is no lack of pigment here, and if you want a punchy, funky teal, you’ve come to the right place.

Grey – I always crave a nice grey with blueish undertones for spring. It really is the ultimate color that allows brighter, more showstopping shades to take center stage. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Essie’s Petal Pushers is perfection! Another home run for their spring collection.

Dusty Pastels – Whether it’s blue, pink, purple or green, pastels shine brightest during the spring. This year, I’m extra loving the dusty versions of these soft shades. Julep’s Shelly, a dusty mint, has been the apple of my eye for the last couple months, and I can’t wait to continue to wear it through the spring months!

Currently Crushing: White & Gold

Let’s be real here, because who am I kidding. The title should really say always crushing. Forever crushing. White and gold are like PB & J, Mac & Cheese, Sonny & Cher. They’re all better together. The classic combination is a huge trend right now, and I don’t think it’s leaving anytime soon!

White and Gold Favorites // Novels and Nail Polish

It’s almost impossible for me to see something white & gold and walk past without falling in love. Because of that, my collection has grown significantly, and I’ve picked out a few of my favorite things!
White and Gold Favorites // Novels and Nail Polish

  1. Be Our Guest Coaster Set – I picked up this porcelain coaster set at Walt Disney World a couple years back, and it’s been a fairy tale sort of love ever since. They each feature a different image that gives a simple and classy nod to my love of Disney.
  2. Kate Spade Bow Push Pins – Bows + gold + desk accessories = the reason Kate Spade owns my heart. These bow push pins are sturdy and perfect for every girl that wants the prettiest cork board around!
  3. Chevron Wrapping Paper – This gem was found at the holy land… Target. Like most other things in that store, it made its way into my basket and into my heart.
  4. Marc Jacobs Daisy Rollerball – I’ve mentioned it before, Marc Jacobs is the king of perfect perfumes and gorgeous bottles. Daisy is a classic, and this portable rollerball is just right for afternoon touch-ups.
  5. Gold Paper Feather – Three words: Target Dollar Spot. They put it right up front and grab you before your basket is full of other unnecessary things that seem oh so important. I just had to bring these home for my inspiration board!
  6. Pretty Pen – It only seems right to proclaim at this point: long live the Target Dollar Spot. Their pens duos are always gorgeous, and whenever there’s a new style, they end up in my basket.
  7. Bud Vase – I’ll give you a cookie and all of my love if you can guess where this guy is from. Yup! Target.
  8. Julep Vivien – If you’re looking for a chunky glitter polish with personality, Vivien is for you. This full-coverage glitter is gorgeous and one of my favorites.

White and Gold Manicure // Novels and Nail Polish I had some fun with a couple different striping patterns for this manicure. When using striping tape with a polish that has macro-glitter, make sure to check the big chunks are off of the tape before you remove it. That way your lines stay crisp and clean!

Nail Polish Favorites // Fall 2014

Fall 2014 Nail PolishIt’s time to fall into autumn! Gone are the days of sweltering temps and short shorts (unless you’re in Southern California like me), and here are the day of sweaters and falling leaves. The transition between summer and fall is one of my favorite season changes. By this point, I’m always ready to pull out my boots, scarves and most importantly, fall nail polish!

Crisp air and a more dramatic, moody color palette screams fall, and that is why I love these colors for this time of year. My selections for Fall 2014 include rich blues and reds, mixed metals and of course, grey.

Fall 2014 Nail Polish

Mixed Metals: I am a lover of gold things, so any chance I get to wear some variation of sparkle, I’m happy. For this season, grey skies look great against a metallic duo of brushed silver and dragonfly gold. Julep’s Brit and Harlow are up to this job! Harlow is wonderfully multidimensional, with its green gold shimmer. And Brit, one of my all time fav Julep polishes, dries matte, a perfect touch for fall.

Fall 2014 Nail Polish

Burnt Red: Julep Sheila has just enough twist on the classic red to work for autumn months. It’s burnt red hue adds a warmth that chilly afternoon’s need.

Fall 2014 Nail Polish

Warm Grey: Who doesn’t love grey for fall is the real question here! It is basically the perfect color for sweater weather and all that jazz. It’s timeless and low maintenance, which makes it easy to throw on in a hurry!

Fall 2014 Nail Polish

Navy and Cream: Navy and cream are the perfect bookends of the light to dark spectrum for fall colors. Summer brings out bright white polishes, so the way to keep that look going into autumn is with a smooth cream. It has enough personality to stand up to the darker hues of fall, while still giving your hands a fresh look.

The easiest way to go dark, without going all the way black, is navy. It’s sexy and sultry and so great for fun fall nights!
